Elphinstone Reef is considered one of the most spectacular dive sites in the entire Red Sea — and also one of the most searched-for reefs near Marsa Alam. In this guide, we answer the key questions: how deep is the reef, what sharks are actually there, and when is the best time to visit?
How deep is Elphinstone Reef?
Elphinstone is an elongated plateau reef that drops steeply into the blue. The north plateau sits at around 20 meters, while the walls on the sides drop past 60 meters. For most recreational divers, the 20-40 meter range is where the action happens — this is also where most of the marine life is found.
Are there sharks at Elphinstone?
Yes — and that's the main reason divers travel here from all over the world. The most commonly sighted species is the oceanic whitetip shark, especially between September and November. Occasionally hammerhead sharks and larger pelagic species like tuna and barracuda are also spotted. There's never a guarantee of shark sightings, but the odds at Elphinstone are significantly better than at most other reefs in the region.
Who is Elphinstone suitable for?
Elphinstone is not a beginner reef. Due to the depth, potential currents, and boat-only access (no shore diving), we recommend at least PADI Advanced Open Water certification, ideally with some experience in drift diving. Our guides adjust each dive based on group experience.

How do you get to Elphinstone Reef?
From our Marsa Alam bases (Jaz Grand Marsa, Iberotel Costa Mares), Elphinstone is reached by speedboat in about 45-60 minutes. Trips are typically full-day excursions with two to three dives.
