The Dive Sites from Kendwa
Mnemba Atoll (30 min by speedboat)
Zanzibar's most famous dive site. Expect 25–30m visibility, walls dropping to 40m+, turtles, dolphins, and seasonal whale sharks (July–September). Suitable for all levels from Open Water upward.
Tumbatu Island (20 min by boat)
Coral gardens and sloping reefs at 5–25m. Excellent for beginners and macro photography. Giant clams, seahorses, and schools of surgeonfish. Calm conditions year-round.
Hunga Reef (25 min)
10–22m reef with dramatic coral formations and swim-throughs. Large schools of barracuda and trevally. Good for Open Water divers and above.
Nankivell Reef (20 min)
Shallow reef (8–18m) ideal for Discover Scuba Diving and beginners. Turtles are almost guaranteed — this is a cleaning station for hawksbill turtles.
Leven Bank (45 min — advanced only)
Seamount rising from 60m+ to a plateau at 14m. Eagle rays, grey reef sharks, giant groupers. Strong currents — Advanced Open Water or 30+ logged dives required. This is the most exciting dive in Zanzibar for experienced divers.
Kendwa vs Nungwi — Which Is Better for Diving?
Both beaches are on Zanzibar's northwest coast and access the same dive sites (Mnemba, Tumbatu). But Kendwa has clear advantages:
- No tidal restrictions — Nungwi boats cannot depart at low tide. Kendwa boats run all day.
- Sandy beach entry — no rocks, no urchins. Perfect for shore dives and training.
- Night diving any night — not limited by tide cycles.
- Less crowded — fewer dive centers operating from Kendwa means quieter reefs.

- Discover Scuba Diving — 1 day, no certification needed
- PADI Open Water Diver — 3–4 days, full certification
- PADI Advanced Open Water — 2 days, 5 adventure dives including Leven Bank deep dive
- PADI Rescue Diver — 3–4 days
- PADI Divemaster — 4–6 weeks internship
- Specialties: Deep Diver, Nitrox, Night Diver, Peak Performance Buoyancy
The warm, calm water of December-February is ideal for beginners. June-October offers the best conditions for advanced training with whale shark season in full swing.
