Diving Abu Kifan

Abu Kifan is a 300 meters long off-shore reef, said to be one of the best volcanic pinnacles off the shores of Soma Bay and Safaga. The site got its name from the large gorgonian fan corals. Features very steep sloping walls which plummet to over 100 meters into the deep at all sides.

With reach coral growth from the surface shallows down. There are numerous undercut sections and reef shelves harboring dense soft corals growth. There is everything here: Dendronephthya soft trees corals, Gorgonians Sea Fans, Black corals, turtles and many pelagic visitors to be spotted out at the blue.

The site is generally dived as a drift dive along the reef walls. The current here is usually moderate but can pick up speed at certain phases of the moon. Fish life is excellent, with a vast array of groupers, schooling barracudas, massive congregations of snappers and unicorn fishes and some giant morays.

The reefs in Soma Bay are very healthy, full of color and surrounded by clouds of Anthias. It’s possible to spot turtles and some reef sharks too. For the macro lovers seahorses, frogfish and ghost pipefish are there to be seen.

There is a good number of sheer reef walls and drop off for the enthusiastic divers like Panorama Reef. Many of the dive sites also offers caverns and large overhangs which are home to an abundance of schooling glass fish.
