PADI Junior Open Water: Diving Courses for Kids from Age 10

Many families wonder at what age children can start diving. The answer: with the PADI Junior Open Water Diver course, children from age 10 can earn a globally recognised diving certification — safely, age-appropriately, and with specific guidelines designed to protect young divers. As a PADI 5-Star dive center on the Red Sea, we've guided thousands of children through their first diving certification over more than a decade.

What's the Difference from the Regular Open Water Course?

The content of the Junior Open Water course is identical to the adult program — same theory, same skills, same four open water dives. The key difference lies in the safety guidelines:

Age GroupMaximum DepthSupervision Required
10-11 years12 metersCertified adult at all times
12-14 years18 metersCertified adult at all times
From 15 years18 metersAutomatically upgraded to full certification

At age 15, the Junior certification automatically upgrades to a full PADI Open Water Diver certification — no additional course or exam required.

Is My Child Ready for a Diving Course?

Beyond the minimum age, individual factors matter: swimming ability, attention span, and comfort in the water. Our instructors have a brief conversation with both parents and child before the course starts to make sure it's the right choice — no pressure, no obligation.

A great stepping stone before Junior Open Water is our PADI Bubblemaker program — available from age 8, in shallow protected water, ideal for finding out whether diving suits your child before committing to a full course.

Course Structure and Duration

The course typically takes 3-4 days and includes:

  • Theory sessions — presented in a child-friendly, interactive and practical format
  • Confined water skills — learning core techniques safely in shallow water
  • Four guided open water dives — at our calm house reefs in Marsa Alam or Makadi Bay

The pace is adapted individually to each child — there is no time pressure and no performance benchmarks under stress.

What Can Kids Dive After Certification?

With a Junior Open Water Diver certification, children can explore the Red Sea's underwater world in an entirely new way. Great first dives for kids:

Safety First

Our instructors are specifically trained in working with young divers. Group sizes in children's courses are smaller than in adult courses. Scuba World Divers is rated 6.0/6.0 — Excellent on HolidayCheck — in part because of the quality of care we provide for families and children.

PADI's safety guidelines for junior divers apply without exception at all our locations.

Cost

The PADI Junior Open Water Diver course at Scuba World Divers starts from €280 — the same price as the adult course, the same equipment rental, the same quality of instruction. A full overview of all course prices is available in our PADI course cost guide for Egypt 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a parent need to be a certified diver too?
Yes — for children under 15, supervision by a certified adult on every dive is mandatory. If you're not yet certified, we can arrange your Open Water course in parallel with your child's course — ideal for family holidays where everyone learns together.

What happens to the certification when my child turns 15?
It automatically upgrades to a full PADI Open Water Diver certification — no extra course, no additional fee.

Are there introductory programs for younger children?
Yes — from age 8, we offer the PADI Bubblemaker program: a playful first experience with diving in shallow, protected water. Perfect for children who want to try diving before committing to a full course.

Can my child dive the Salem Express or Elphinstone after Junior Open Water?
Not yet — the Salem Express wreck and deeper sites like Elphinstone Reef require the Advanced Open Water course. For newly certified junior divers, we recommend starting with the calm house reefs and Dolphin House.

When is the best time of year for families with children?
Summer (June-August) offers the warmest water (28-29°C) — ideal for children who are more sensitive to cold. Our full seasonal overview is in the Best Time to Dive Egypt guide.
