Overview

Ras Abu Soma is one of the most popular and wonderfully versatile dive sites within Soma Bay's calm inner reef system. This dive explores the "Ras," or headland, of the main Abu Soma reef, but on its gentle and protected leeward side. This unique position provides the interesting topography of a reef point with the calm, easy conditions of a sheltered bay, making it a perfect "all-rounder" dive suitable for everyone.

The dive is typically conducted as a gentle one-way drift, allowing you to cover a lot of ground effortlessly. You will descend onto a beautiful sloping wall covered in healthy hard corals and follow it as it curves gracefully around the point. The wall eventually gives way to a shallow sandy plateau dotted with numerous coral blocks, each one a small hub of marine activity. This easy, predictable profile and varied scenery make it a fantastic site for divers of all levels, including students making their first boat dives after completing the PADI Open water Diver course.

This is a fantastic site for mixed-level groups and a great place to spot moray eels, pufferfish, and blue-spotted rays. Because it is a point, there’s always a chance of a pleasant surprise like a turtle or an eagle ray passing by in the blue. The sheer number of species makes it a great location for the AWARE - Fish Identification specialty. It’s a beautiful and reliable choice for a great day of diving in Soma Bay.
