Overview

Venturing out from the sheltered inner reefs, Middle Reef is a massive and spectacular outer reef system that offers a true sense of exploration for advanced divers. This site is a complex underwater landscape featuring a main reef wall, a deep sandy plateau, and several enormous, beautifully decorated pinnacles. Its exposure to the open sea brings currents that attract larger marine life, making for an exciting and unpredictable dive.

The dive is almost always conducted as a one-way drift, allowing you to cover a significant portion of this vast reef. The plan often starts with an exploration of one of the giant pinnacles that rise from the plateau, before letting the current guide you along the main wall. Here, you'll want to keep one eye on the beautiful coral formations and the other looking out into the blue for passing tuna, jacks, and the occasional eagle ray. The scale of the site is impressive, making it a fantastic adventure for divers with a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification or higher.

This is a premier Soma Bay dive site for seeing larger marine life like Napoleon wrasse and turtles. It’s a perfect dive to apply the skills from the PADI Drift Diver and PADI Deep Diver specialties. For experienced divers looking for a grand adventure, Middle Reef consistently delivers.
