The Salem Express is not just a wreck dive; it is a memorial and a moment of reflection. This passenger ferry sank in a tragic accident in 1991, and it remains a gravesite that must be treated with the utmost respect and sensitivity. We offer this dive for experienced divers who wish to pay their respects and bear witness to this powerful piece of maritime history. It is a solemn, moving, and unforgettable experience.
The wreck of the Salem Express is enormous, lying on its port side at a maximum depth of 30 meters. The dive plan is a slow and contemplative tour of the exterior of the vessel. Out of respect for the victims and the history of the site, penetration of the main body of the wreck is strictly forbidden. You will glide past the ship's large funnels, the bridge, the lifeboats on the seabed, and the now-open vehicle loading doors. The ship is slowly becoming an artificial reef, but the focus of this dive is the vessel itself and its poignant story.
This dive is reserved for certified Advanced Open Water Divers or higher. It is a key experience for those undertaking the PADI Wreck Diver specialty, where the principles of responsible and respectful wreck diving are paramount. This is not a dive for entertainment, but one for quiet contemplation and remembrance.
